Etymology: Leer, in Young and Morgan 1992, describes an earlier form *we, and describes the form with the *-nʸ nasal perfective suffix as the basic form of the root. Several Eyak terms relating to swimming are w-initial, such as ’iswe:l (“swimming”). Note that Eyak /l/ often corresponds to Proto-Athabaskan nasals.
